About Us

Welcome to Betty’s Farm

Simon, Emma, Oliver and Oscar would like to welcome you to our family run farm on the Derbyshire/Staffordshire border.

We are primarily a free range egg farm, with a commercial flock of 24,000 free range laying hens and a small flock of sheep, along with goats, guinea pigs, ferrets and a rabbit! We also have a farm shop and butchery, selling local and home reared products. Our trademarks are an 11kw wind turbine, which can be seen from the A38, and our 200kw photovoltaic system, which helps to reduce our impact on the environment.

We have a small but perfectly formed team of experts working at Betty’s Farm. We are also joined on a regular basis by work experience and veterinary students, and welcome pupils from local specialist schools on a regular basis.

We aim to:

  • Achieve high animal welfare
  • Employ locally
  • Reduce our impact on the environment
  • To be part of the community

In 2009 Betty’s Farm was a greenfield site, used for arable production.

In 2010 it was bought by the John Bowler Franchise and converted into a free range egg laying unit, run by Emma and Simon Ruff. Emma stated selling eggs from a trestle table every Saturday and this led to the farm shop, which opened in 2011. The farm is named after John Bowler’s mother, Betty.

In June 2012 the decision was taken to rent the whole farm and Simon joined the team permanently to help on the farm and develop the butchery. Since 2012 the farm and team at Betty’s has continued to grow and develop into the farm it is today.

We are proud to share our farm with our customers and have extensive plans to further develop the farm and shop in the coming years.

Our butchery creates a wide selection of bespoke cuts.
